Surfing and serving might seem worlds apart, but they share one core rule: Stay balanced or wipe out.

I once worked a breakfast shift with a full dining room, one working coffee machine, and a dishwasher that called out sick. It was pure chaos. But I thought of my surfer buddies: how they handle rough waves with focus and flow.

I told myself, “Paddle through. Don’t panic. Catch the next good set.”

So I kept moving, kept smiling, and cracked jokes with the regulars. One guest even said, “You guys should get a medal for keeping cool.”

That’s the thing about hospitality. You’re always riding waves. Some days are glassy and smooth; others are stormy and unpredictable. But if you breathe, stay light on your feet, and trust your training, you’ll find your rhythm.

So here’s my surfer tip for the service world: Stay calm, stay kind, and enjoy the ride. Because life’s a beach — and sometimes, it tips well too.
